Officially, accreditation is optional for private schools in Kansas, although they can become accredited through the Kansas Board of Education. Registration of nonpublic schools is mandatory, although Licensing is not and Approval is optional for schools below high school level. Approval is based on adherence to the criteria set out by the Kansas State Board of Education.
Teacher certification is mandatory at accredited schools, but is optional at non-accredited schools as long as they are “competent instructors”. Instructors at an accredited school must be evaluated in written form once a semester for their first two years. Thereafter, evaluations must take place yearly or once every three years, depending on the length of employment. Accredited private schools are required to teach reading, writing, arithmetic, geography, spelling, grammar, U.S. and Kansas history, civil government and citizenship, health and hygiene and other subjects as determined by the state board.
All students not previously enrolled in a Kansas school must present a valid health assessment prior to beginning school covering proof of basic health and immunizations. If they are exempt based on religious or medical reasons, signed paperwork must be submitted to the school.
