The oversight and regulation of residential care facilities is done by the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services and promotes safety and proper care of residents of each program. The Health Facility Licensing Unit inspects and issues licenses for alternative and therapeutic programs in the state.
A private New Hampshire schools is not required to be accredited but are encouraged to do so. Registration and approval is mandatory by the New Hampshire Board of Education and it sets rules and regulations to monitor private schools. Teachers are not required to be certified in order to teach in New Hampshire private schools and all private schools must teach basic courses in history and government starting in 8th grade. Private schools may participate in statewide testing after applying through the Department of Education.
